Synaesthesia

Synaesthesia, according to Andrew Goodwin in his Dancing in the Distracting Factory, is a process by which sensory impressions are carried over from one sense to another. For example, when listening to music, you imagine images.

When I listen to Better Than Ezra’s, Our Last Night, I see images of teenagers driving to a cliff, sitting on the hood of the car, blasting the music and just hanging out there talking and looking at the stars until the early morning.

Our Last Night does not have a music video yet; however, according to Goodwin, video clips in music videos build on the sound track’s visual associations. Therefore it would be likely that the video would have images similar to what I described I see when I listen to the song. However, according to Dr.Strangelove, the feelings, thoughts, and images evoked when we listen to music relate to our personal and cultural experiences. So someone from a different culture or who has different personal experiences may see images very different from mine.
